Despite not feeling quite like myself, I've spent much of this month on the road, which I always love!

Jana J. Shakespeare (cadenza) > Day 60/365
Tuesday, 10 June 2008
It's Grandma's fault. Even years after she's gone. She taught me to crochet as a girl, but I've only put my hand to it a few times as an adult. Now with pregnancy hormones rushing through, I'm determined to make a beautiful baby blanket, but it's hard after years with no practice. I so miss my dear grandmother's watchful eye.

I was in Llandudno, on the Welsh north coast, for a two-day conference. It was cloudy and windy, and everyone had to wear wetsuits. But nothing separates a man from his boat, clearly.

Llandudno is a quiet, but lovely town.

Today, I was a good girl, went to a farm and picked a few things straight off the plants. It doesn't get fresher than this!

This plate was given to me years ago, a gift from my Palestinian friend, Shaden, and now stands in the window of our living room.

This prehistoric tomb is probably 4000 years old. The top is a single slab of stone weighing a couple of tons--it's the largest burial chamber in the country. It's a complete mystery how they built these things -- they'd be a challenge even with modern construction equipment. But the ancient Celts did it repeatedly. The tomb has collected a number of folk tales over the years. The best known of these legends is that anyone who spends a night at this site on the evenings preceding May Day, St John's Day (23rd June), or Midwinter Day would either die, go raving mad, or become a poet. The group of boulders to the south of the monument is said to be women turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath

There's a reason they call it "SqueezyJet"! Today, I flew with Andrew to spend ten days at my in-laws' house in the south of France. It was raining as we boarded; Andrew said, "I'll bet it's still raining when we get home." As it turned out, he was right!

This is where my in-laws live. Sweet, or what! You've probably heard of the south French region of Provence. Well, this is Vence, founded by Romans, a bustling city of major economic and strategic importance during the middle ages, today a beautiful, ancient, sleepy commuter town for Nice, with the smallest cathedral in Europe (that's the tower -- it started life as a Roman temple to Mars).
