Jana J. Shakespeare (cadenza) > Day 69/365
Thursday, 19 June 2008
Day 2 of our vacation, Andrew's parents took us into the foothills of the Alps that begin just behind Vence. A glorious, sunny, hot day, we had lunch at an open-air restaurant in Le Gourdon, an old village perched at the top of a cliff. Andrew's dad is seventy-one, but can still crack a pace that wore me out!

In southern France's glorious, languid sunny evenings, people still gather outside cafes with a coffee or glass of "vin rouge" to play Petanque, a famously French sport similar to lawn bowling. You might think it's more about social interaction than the game, but they get very passionate and competitive, and bicker endlessly about fair play!

The main square of Vence was covered in heart-shaped confetti following several weddings held at the cathedral that day. The children were gathered for the FĂȘte de la Musique (mid-summer music festival) and entertained themselves playing with the hearts while their parents listened to the musicians.

Cannes, famous for its film festival, is a beach resort for the very, very rich and very, very beautiful. You have to wonder just who owns this monster!

Cap Ferrat is a famous spot on the French coast. That house you see at the crest of the promontory is said to belong to the Vanderbilts.

This is the street my in-laws live on. I loved that I could touch both sides of the street at the same time. It dates back to the fourteenth century. You may not be surprised to learn that cars are forbidden in the village. My in-laws have to keep theirs in a garage some ten minutes' walk away, an inconvenience they cheerfully consider a very small price.

Hugo considers the whole street his territory, and audibly defends it every night.

Oh, patisserie! Everything you've heard about French food is probably true. A girl could get very heavy here! Oddly enough, very few people are. Obesity hardly exists.

The Alps start here. This is the view from Jill and Howard's balcony. Need one say more? Only that it was painful to return home to Welsh rain following Riviera sunshine.
